World : Shamir Offers Proposals to Baker
Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir today presented Secretary of State James A. Baker III “some ways to solve” problems in the Middle East and Baker said he was encouraged.
Although details were not immediately disclosed, Shamir said last week in Israel that he would propose that Palestinian Arabs hold elections to choose leaders for negotiations over the West Bank and Gaza.
“I feel we have started a very serious discussion,” Shamir said after the two-hour meeting at the State Department. Shamir is to see President Bush on Thursday.
