A United Airlines Boeing 747 with a faulty landing gear touched down safely at Australia’s Sydney International Airport, but the hard landing resulted in some wing damage, an airline spokesman said. There were no injuries among the 231 passengers and crew of 16. The spokesman said a mechanism that controls the main pivot in the right-wing landing gear malfunctioned as the jumbo jet was landing after a flight from Auckland, New Zealand. “We just had a hard landing, and apparently the wing landing gear broke and protruded through the wing,” he said.
