Authorities today charged Rabbi Moshe Levinger, militant champion of Jewish settlement in the occupied territories, with killing a Palestinian merchant after an attack by Arab stone-throwers.

A Justice Ministry spokeswoman said Levinger was charged in Jerusalem District Court with manslaughter, sabotage and intention to damage property. He faces more than 20 years in prison if convicted.

Levinger, a founder of the militant Gush Emunim settlement movement, is a right-wing rabbi who led the first group of Israelis to establish a Jewish presence in the West Bank town of Hebron after the 1967 Six-Day War.
