P.M. BRIEFING : Lockheed Fighting OSHA Charges of Safety, Health Record Violations
Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co. announced today that it is contesting the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s allegations of 440 safety and health-related record-keeping violations at its Burbank plant.
OSHA issued three citations March 24 proposing about $1.47 million in civil penalties against Lockheed, which is based in Calabasas. It was the largest fine proposed in California by OSHA since it took over the state’s Cal-OSHA program in July, 1987.
The aerospace contractor had until Friday to accept the citations, pay the penalties and fix the problems or contest the violations before an OSHA review commission.
Lockheed’s facilities in Burbank employ about 14,000 workers in about 200 buildings. The OSHA findings followed a four-month investigation.
OSHA alleged that all but 99 of the 440 violations were “willful.”
