Lou Janicich has received the 1989 Citizen of the Year Award from the Harbor Area District Boy Scouts of America. A San Pedro resident since 1942, Janicich has been active in March of Dimes, San Pedro YMCA, Muscular Dystrophy, John Tracy Clinic for Hearing Impaired and the City of Hope. He will be honored at a dinner at 6:30 p.m. May 5 at Mary Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, 870 8th St., San Pedro. Proceeds of the dinner will benefit Boy Scout programs in the Harbor District, which includes San Pedro, Wilmington, Harbor City, Lomita and Carson.

Edris Newton has been named senior librarian at the Westchester Branch of Los Angeles Public Library. Newton was children’s librarian at the library’s Mar Vista branch. She began her career with the library in 1965 as a messenger clerk in the Central Library and has worked in many Los Angeles branch libraries.

Margaret Matthews is the new coordinator of the Guilded Cage, a nonprofit gift and card shop operated to raise money for support of the Airport Marina Counseling Service, a nonprofit mental health clinic in Westchester. In her volunteer position, Matthews will oversee the operation of the shop and its 60-member volunteer staff. The Guilded Cage is located at 8728 1/4 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Westchester.

Keith Brackpool and Bruce Hecker of the Manhattan Country Club recently presented $13,000 to Lynn Wolf, president of the Friends of the Wellness Community, and Christine Campisi, president of the board of directors of the Wellness Community-South Bay Cities. The Friends of the Wellness Community, which has more than 400 members, was started by a group of Manhattan Country Club members. The Wellness Community provides free psychosocial support for cancer patients and their families at its Redondo Beach facility.
