The United States has decided to lift a one-month ban and release $230 million in economic aid to Egypt that had been held up while Cairo undertook bureaucratic reforms, the State Department said. The $230 million covers cash payments to Egypt for this year and for 1988. Overall, Egypt is due to receive $1.63 billion in U.S. economic assistance for the two years plus surplus food, making it the second-largest U.S. aid recipient after Israel.
