James P. Lough, Hermosa Beach’s city attorney for the last four years, is resigning effective May 15 to become Humboldt County counsel. He said he will report for work in Eureka on June 1.

“My decision is based on family and career considerations,” Lough, 36, said this week. He said he will supervise five other attorneys in his new position and be able to spend more time with his family in a rural setting near the Oregon border.

“I’ve enjoyed my assignment here and learned a lot,” he said, “and now it’s time to move on.”

Hermosa Beach contracted with a Los Angeles law firm that assigned Lough to handle the city’s legal work on Jan. 1, 1985. About a year later, the City Council agreed to transfer the contract to Lough when he left the firm to start his own practice in Pasadena.

City officials said they will begin an immediate search for a replacement.
