Christian and Muslim gunners pounded each other’s residential areas of Beirut, stalling the evacuation of wounded to a French hospital ship as Lebanon’s bitter civil war entered its 15th year. Police said 19 people were killed and 50 wounded. The bombardment was the fiercest since April 5, when the Arab League called for a cease-fire to halt the worst sectarian fighting since 1985. The truce, like others in the long war, soon failed. The new fighting shelved plans to ferry seriously wounded Muslims and Christians to the French ship.
