Alcohol Tax

Share

Perhaps I missed some crucial logic in your editorial on the Alaskan oil spill (“Hazards of Imported Oil,” March 31). I agree that we need to curb our dependence on oil, but to leap from the pollution of Prince William Sound, which was caused by drunkenness, to a 50-cents per gallon tax increase on gas is to target the wrong liquid. What is needed is a much stiffer tax on alcohol. That might discourage consumption on the part of drinkers who are out at night causing trouble, and also wasting oil.
