San Clemente : Seniors Can Now Adopt Pets Without Charge

Share

City officials have unanimously agreed to waive all pet-adoption fees for senior citizens.

Roberta Gorny, manager of the San Clemente Animal Shelter, said Monday that Orange County residents who are 60 years or older are eligible to participate in the Senior Companion Animal Program sponsored by the shelter.

The program is about a month old and is designed “to provide love and companionship for seniors who couldn’t afford to pay for an animal,” Gorny said.

Mayor Brian Rice said the City Council agreed to waive the fees 2 weeks ago “to make it easier for people to adopt the animals.”

The shelter’s support group--the Friends of San Clemente Animals--will pay up to $150 for each pet’s medical care and will provide free leashes, cat litter boxes and educational materials.
