Atty. Gen. Roberto Garcia Alvarado was assassinated today by unidentified assailants as he drove to his office in the capital.

A bomb was placed on the roof of Garcia’s Jeep Cherokee--which had bulletproof windows and was reinforced with plate steel--when it stopped at a traffic light, according to Oscar Orellana, the attorney general’s driver. Garcia, 53, was also accompanied by a bodyguard at the time of the attack.

Neither the driver nor the bodyguard was visibly wounded, though both complained of partial deafness from the blast.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. However, President-elect Alfredo Cristiani blamed leftist guerrillas battling the U.S.-backed government.
