THE COLLEGES : College Roundup : USC Defeats Titans, 9-8, in 11 Innings

John Jackson scored on a passed ball in the top of the 11th inning Tuesday to give USC a 9-8 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a nonconference baseball game at Fullerton.

Jackson led off the inning with a single to left. Mark Smith followed with a ground ball to third baseman Ralph Ramirez, who threw to second to force Jackson. However, second baseman John Paboojin missed the ball and Jackson advanced to third.

Catcher Eddie Lample then mishandled a pitch from loser Eric Silvey (0-2), allowing Jackson to score.

USC (33-18) led, 7-1, but Fullerton scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth. David Staton had a pinch-hit grand slam to give the Titans (25-17) an 8-7 lead.

The Trojans tied the score in the ninth on a one-out double by Brett Jenkins and a run-scoring single by Bret Boone.

UC Irvine 3-0, University of San Diego 1-1--In the first game, Courtney Davis hit a double and a single and scored twice for host UC Irvine (14-25-1).

In the Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 6, Cal Lutheran 3--The Vanguards (22-15, 10-5) scored four runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead at SCC. Kendall Kasper, Denny Berni and Mike Slagle all had run-scoring singles in the fifth.

In nonconference softball:

Southern California College 8-0 Loyola Marymount 5-3 (first game 12 innings)--Linda Bilyeu had a two-run double in the top of the 12th to give SCC (16-20) a 7-5 lead.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis:

Chapman 5, UC Riverside 4--Olivier Amerlinck and Darren Capik defeat Greg Skaggs and Jim Wilbanks, 6-2, 7-5, to clinch the match for Chapman (13-9, 7-2) at Riverside.

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 7, Cal State Fullerton 2--Courtney Weichsel defeated Nicole Brochtbuhl, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, as the Anteaters (13-14, 6-4) won five of six singles matches.
