Record 229 AIDS Cases in March

A record 229 new AIDS cases were confirmed in Los Angeles County in March, topping the previous high for a single month of 220 reported last August, officials reported Wednesday.

Through March, 582 new AIDS cases had been confirmed this year in the county, according to the Department of Health Services, a 14% increase over the same period last year.

As of the end of March, a total of 6,737 AIDS cases had been confirmed in the county. AIDS-related complications have resulted in 4,337 deaths, a mortality rate of 64%.

Another 173 cases are pending investigation.

Of the cases confirmed in March, two were children and 227 were adults. The month’s total was up sharply from February, when 172 new AIDS cases were reported.

Homosexuals and bisexual males remain the largest at-risk group, accounting for 94% of all AIDS cases.
