Lech Walesa arrived in Rome for his first trip abroad since Solidarity was legalized and said the union he founded is now ready to help the Warsaw government begin “a new chapter in the building of Poland.” He urged the West to help his country tackle its economic crisis and support its drive for political liberalization. The primary purpose of Walesa’s trip is to thank Pope John Paul II, the first Polish pontiff, for his support of Solidarity.
