New Hampshire Gov. Judd Gregg vetoed a bill that would repeal three 19th-Century state laws making abortion a crime, Assistant Secretary of State Robert Ambrose said. The veto came one day after the state Senate voted 13 to 11 to repeal the laws, which were written in 1848. The House passed the bill March 23. The laws have not been enforced since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion. Gregg, a conservative Republican, has said he personally opposes abortion but strongly believes government should stay out of people’s private business. He had no immediate statement on his veto.
