This country’s first nuclear reactor will start operating next month and reach its full capacity by late July, the head of the Peruvian Nuclear Energy Institute said Friday.

Cristobal Miletich said the experimental plant at Huarangal outside Lima will produce radio isotopes used mainly in cancer therapy. It is too small to supply nuclear energy.

Miletich said that scientists are rushing to finish the $107-million, 10-megawatt plant after nine years of construction.
