Deposed Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos and his wife, Imelda, today lost a Supreme Court appeal aimed at overturning a court order freezing their assets.

The court, without comment, let stand a ruling that, in effect, requires the Marcoses to defend themselves in a lawsuit filed by the Philippine government. The suit at issue is one of several legal battles--civil and criminal--facing the ailing Marcos, 71, and Mrs. Marcos, 59.

The case acted on today stems from a suit by the Philippine government of Corazon Aquino seeking $50 billion in punitive damages from the Marcoses. They are accused in the suit of bribery, extortion, theft and other charges.
