A Japanese whaling ship returned to Japan from a controversial research whale hunt in the Antarctic with about 240 minke whales that will be sold for meat. The 23,000-ton Nisshin Maru No. 3, a factory ship for processing whale meat, and two smaller ships completed their 129-day trip despite efforts by the environmental group Greenpeace to disrupt the voyage. The International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling in 1986, but Japan continues to catch whales as part of a research project to determine the number and habits of certain whales.
