A former high-level school district official was sentenced today to 16 months in state prison for his role in a theft ring that stole at least $1 million in supplies from city schools.

Superior Court Judge Gordon Ringer imposed the sentence on James Riley, 56, of Lynwood, who was fired as director of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s operations branch after being charged in the case in March, 1987.

Ringer also ordered Robert J. Barrios, 34, of Tujunga, a minor figure in the 21-person theft ring, to make $28,000 restitution and pay a $5,000 fine. In addition, Barrios was sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to perform 400 hours of community service.
