55-ALIVE MATURE DRIVING CLASS SCHEDULE

Since 1987, California licensed drivers 55 and older have been entitled to auto insurance premium discounts on liability, medical and collision coverage if every 3 years they take a state-approved course designed to improve driving skills and promote road safety. Although discounts depend on a driver’s record and insurance carrier, the law applies to all California automobile insurance companies.

The improvement course is available at private driving schools, public and private colleges and offered by nonprofit organizations at community-based locations. The cost is usually $8. The Department of Motor Vehicles will issue certificates to those who complete the course. The certificate must be submitted to an insurance carrier for discount benefit.

Here’s a list of places where classes will be held during May:

Laguna Hills: 8 a.m. to noon May 1 and 2, 8 and 9, 22 and 23 at Leisure World (Club House Dining Room), 23522 Paseo de Valencia. For more information, call Tony at (714) 837-3550. (This course for Leisure World residents only.)

Mission Viejo: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 6 and 13, May 22 and 23 and June 19 and 20, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 8 and 9 at Casta del Sol, 27651 Casta del Sol. For more information contact Sarah at (714) 837-6921. (This course for Casta del Sol residents only.)
