After 20 months of repair, a statue depicting two gay couples is ready to return to the Stanford University campus. Vandals spray-painted the word “AIDS” on the bronze sculpture of two men standing next to each other and two women seated together on a park bench. It was the second time the artwork was defaced since it was installed in 1984. Shortly after it was placed in the main quad area, the work by George Segal, entitled “Gay Liberation,” was struck 40 times with a hammer. The recent restoration job was prolonged because it took experts months to find the proper method of restoring the white color to the striking bronze statue. Workers plan to reinstall the artwork by May 7.
