Centrist Ulysses Guimaraes, 72, defeated a progressive opponent Sunday to win the presidential nomination of the governing Brazilian Democratic Movement Party at the end of a turbulent convention.

Brazil’s first direct presidential election in 29 years is scheduled for Nov. 15.

The Democratic Movement Party is the country’s largest, thus making Guimaraes a serious contender in the election.

However, political analysts say the party is associated with the failures of President Jose Sarney, who has been unable to stop 1,000% annual inflation and reverse public disenchantment with traditional politics.

Guimaraes’ opponents in the race include popular centrist reformer Fernando Collor de Mello, governor of the northeastern state of Alagoas. He is forming a new party.
