From Times staff and wire service reports

In a blaze probably sparked by a cigarette, a Santa Ana woman suffered severe burns over half her body this morning when her one-bedroom mobile home caught fire, a Fire Department spokeswoman said.

Irene Lockhart, 69, was taken to the UC Irvine Medical Center burn unit suffering from second- and third-degree burns, Santa Ana Fire Department spokeswoman Sharon Frank said. Neighbors told firefighters that Lockhart had recently suffered a stroke.

The unconscious Lockhart was rescued from her burning home about 7 a.m. by two firefighters, Frank said. Damage was estimated at $25,000.

A neighbor, Pedro Maldonado, tried to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose at the Taggin’ Wagon Mobile Home Park, Frank said. But when the water hit the fire, Maldonado was scorched by steam, she said. He was treated by paramedics at the scene.
