Pete Rose missed the game with the flu. Montreal’s pitchers would have been better off if they’d stayed home, too.

“It was one of those crazy games where everything was falling in for us,” Jeff Reed said after getting five of Cincinnati’s 21 hits as the Reds crushed the Expos, 19-6, Monday night at Montreal.

Paul O’Neill drove in five runs and had three hits, and Chris Sabo had four hits and drove in four runs for the Reds.

It was the most runs ever scored against the Expos, topping a 17-5 loss to Houston on Aug. 17, 1972.

“We were terrible in every phase of the game,” Montreal Manager Buck Rodgers said. “You play 162 games, you’re going to have nights like that.”

The Reds had 21 hits, the most since they had 20 in 12-10 victory against the New York Mets on May 6, 1980. It was the most runs for the Reds since Sept. 15, 1987, when Cincinnati beat Atlanta, 21-6.

“Just call it a strange night,” Sabo said. “The Expos, along with the Mets, still have the best pitching staff in the league.”

Cincinnati was without Rose, who remained in his hotel with the flu. Coach Tommy Helms managed the team in Rose’s absence.

Rose was examined by Robert Broderick, the Expo team physician, who determined that he had chest congestion and a high fever. Broderick recommended rest for Rose, who listended to a broadcast of the game from his hotel.

New York 3, Atlanta 1--Dwight Gooden allowed six hits in seven-plus innings to improve to 5-0 as the Mets beat the Braves at Atlanta.

Gooden struck out two and walked two as he improved his lifetime record to 96-35, a .733 winning percentage.

Gooden slightly turned his left ankle in the seventh inning while trying to field a slow roller, causing a slight delay while he had it taped in the dugout.

It was the seventh victory in eight games for the Mets, who had a six-game winning streak snapped at Houston on Sunday. The Braves have lost seven straight.

Gooden took a four-hit shutout into the eighth when Jeff Treadway led off with a single and advanced a base when the right-hander’s throw on Darrell Evans’ grounder to the mound was wide at second for an error.

St. Louis 6, San Diego 0--Jose DeLeon pitched a six-hitter for his second shutout in three starts as the Cardinals defeated the Padres at San Diego.

DeLeon (5-1) walked one and struck out eight for his 50th career victory. In his last 35 1/3 innings, DeLeon has allowed just four earned runs. He lowered his earned run average to 1.61.

Bruce Hurst (3-2) allowed 10 hits and six runs in seven innings.

Chicago 4, San Francisco 3--Damon Berryhill, just off the disabled list, led off the 12th inning with a home run to give the Cubs a victory at San Francisco.

Jeff Pico (1-0) pitched three hitless innings for the victory, and Calvin Schiraldi retired the Giants in the bottom of the 12th for his second save.

Berryhill was playing in his first game since he was recalled from the Cubs’ triple-A Iowa affiliate after a rehabilitation assignment. He was placed on the disabled list April 3 with tendinitis in his right shoulder.

Trailing, 3-2, in the eighth, the Giants tied the score off starter Rick Sutcliffe and reliever Mitch Williams.
