From Times wire services

Thai leaders asked Vice President Dan Quayle today not to let trade frictions harm longstanding friendly ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan told Quayle in a dinner speech that the United States and Thailand should not let their trade conflicts “becloud our vision of the future in which new opportunities are opening up for closer and more fruitful cooperation.”

He said Thailand had become a victim of its success and the country’s efforts to achieve a higher level of economic progress had brought with it problems with major trading partners, including the United States.

Washington last week put Thailand on a list of countries it accused of practicing unfair trade for which Washington may retaliate with its own trade sanctions.
