Ex-Officials Seek S. Pasadena Vote

Share

We all grieve the loss of South Pasadena City Councilman Joe Crosby, just as we did when Councilman Bill Osborne died many years ago.

At that time, the council had the option of appointing a replacement or having an election. The council wisely decided to have an election. We hope this council will do the same for the following reasons:

1. The remainder of Crosby’s four-year term is about three years. If the balance of the term were only a few months or even a year, it would be sensible to make an appointment. However, with more than three years remaining, the voters should have the opportunity to decide who the replacement will be.

2. The appointee would be obligated to the council members who put him or her in office. Instead of having an independent council member representing and responsive to the voters, we would have a new council member who would be a product and clone of the members of the present council.

Hence, to adhere to the democratic process of government by the people and for the people, we urgently request that the council set a date for an election. It is worth the expense for taxpayers to be able to cast a vote for the candidate to replace Joe Crosby.
