Limit Sought on City Council Terms

Share

The Rancho Palos Verdes city attorney has approved the wording of a petition that seeks to limit to two the number of terms a City Council member may serve.

Joel Justin King, a one-year city resident who is organizing the petition drive, said he will begin circulating the petition in June.

Rancho Palos Verdes councilmen can serve an unlimited number of four-year terms. Councilman Robert E. Ryan, for instance, has served on the council since the city’s incorporation in 1973.

“I’m doing this because, in our system of government, it is necessary to limit the length of time people serve in any particular capacity,” King said. “They can move on. They can move out. Or they can move up.”
