NATION : Violence Mars Sit-In at University
A sit-in against Pentagon-funded research at the University of Massachusetts turned violent today when police began hitting students who surrounded a bus carrying away the protesters.
About 1 p.m., police dressed in riot gear began leading away the bus carrying students they had arrested for occupying a campus building since Wednesday.
As police were walking alongside the bus, the vehicle suddenly sped up, and some officers began using clubs to hit students who apparently tried to block their progress. It was not immediately known how seriously the students may have been injured.
