Former Washington city employee Charles Lewis, a friend of Mayor Marion Barry, faced new narcotics charges. One count of conspiracy and five counts of cocaine distribution were added to the 10 charges lodged against him earlier. “Today’s indictment alleges significant involvement by Mr. Lewis in a pattern of narcotics trafficking over several years in the District of Columbia and elsewhere in the United States,” said U.S. Atty. Jay B. Stephens. Federal investigations of Lewis began after two city police officers were called off an attempt last Dec. 22 to make an undercover drug purchase from Lewis when Barry showed up at Lewis’ hotel room.
