Irvine : UCI’s Graduation Rate Tops 50% for First Time

For the first time in its history, UC Irvine’s graduation rate among undergraduates has gone over the 50% mark.

A report from the university’s office of analytical studies showed an increase in the 5-year graduation rate of freshmen from 44.3% for the 1978 entering class to 50.8% for the 1982 entering class.

The study also recorded a decrease of 10 percentage points in the freshman dropout rate over the last 8 years and an increase in the rate of graduation for black, Latino, and American Indian students from 30.7% to 47.2%.

Other findings in the 64-page report include higher graduation rates among recent entering black students but a dropout rate higher than any other group of regularly admitted freshman. For the Latino class entering in the fall of 1983, there was only a 2% dropout rate.

The report also showed that community college transfer students have a higher graduation rate than 4-year college transfers.
