A man shot to death by a sheriff’s deputy after a traffic stop in Vista turned into a foot chase and a struggle has been identified as Junior Sylvester Clark, authorities said Saturday.

Clark, 28, was shot in the torso about 4 a.m. Friday when he tried to choke Deputy William Anderson, said Lt. John Tenwolde.

Coroner’s deputy Chuck Bolton said Clark was a janitor, adding that it was not clear whether Clark lived in San Diego. His next-of-kin has been identified as his mother, who lives in Pennsylvania.

Anderson had stopped Clark in the 300 block of Hillside Terrace after suspecting he was intoxicated. Authorities said Clark ran from the car, Anderson gave chase and both ended up in a fight further down the street. After Clark began choking Anderson, the deputy fired one shot, hitting Clark, Tenwolde said.
