Two in Runoff to Be Mayor of El Paso
Two El Paso City Council members will face each other in a May 27 mayoral runoff to determine who will lead that struggling border city.
Elsewhere in Texas, former San Antonio Mayor Lila Cockrell, Ft. Worth Mayor Bob Bolen and Dallas Mayor Annette Strauss coasted to easy victories Saturday.
Council Members Suzy Azar and Mayor Pro-Tem Ed Elsey will face each other to determine who will succeed Jonathan Rogers, who by law could not run for a fifth two-year term in El Paso.
Azar had 16,220 votes, or 31%, compared to 11,930 votes, or 23%, for Elsey. Close behind Elsey was state Rep. Paul Moreno, with 10,452, or 20%. Three other candidates split the rest of the vote.
With all precincts reporting, Cockrell, who was San Antonio’s mayor between 1975 and 1981, received 45,300 votes, or 59%, from a seven-candidate field and on June 1 will replace Mayor Henry G. Cisneros, who chose not to seek a fifth two-year term.
In Dallas, Strauss, backed by a huge campaign fund and the business community, pulled 73% of the vote in a race against three opponents.
In Ft. Worth, Bolen was reelected to his fourth two-year term, receiving 89% of the vote.
