La Jolla High School senior Sara E. Bush, a distant relative of President George Bush, has been named a Presidential Scholar for 1989, the state Department of Education said Tuesday. Bush, one of four California high school seniors among 141 nationwide, will travel to Washington next month to receive the nation’s highest honor for graduating seniors.

Bush, a fifth cousin of the President, was chosen by a panel of educators on the basis of accomplishments in several areas, including academic success, high marks on college-entrance achievement tests, leadership qualities, essays and self-assessment, and involvement in school and community activities. She survived the competition among an initial 3 million students nationwide.

She will receive $1,000 from a private foundation in addition to the award, to be presented at a White House ceremony. Bush has worked on the La Jolla High literary magazine as well as participating in Girl Scouts and other activities. She plans to attend Princeton University.
