A 21-year-old Newport Beach man faces arraignment on May 26 in the death of his infant daughter, who apparently died when he rolled over on her in his sleep.

James B. Corbett III was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter in the death of 6-week-old Tyra Corbett, who was pronounced dead Sunday morning at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach.

Authorities have yet to determine the cause of death, pending tissue and toxicological studies.

Police Officer Bob Oakley said the baby’s mother, Michelle Marie Kroger, 20, discovered the baby lying under Corbett on a couch when she awakened him early Sunday morning.

Oakley said investigators are awaiting the results of blood tests to determine if Corbett was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time. Oakley said, however, that “nothing has come out yet” to indicate the death was other than an accident.

Corbett is scheduled to be arraigned in Municipal Court in Newport Beach.
