Liberia Pays Back $5.3 Million to U.S.

MONROVIA, Liberia —
The Liberian government has met its deadline for debt-arrears payment to the United States, fulfilling Washington’s requirements for resuming assistance, it was announced Thursday.
State radio said that Liberian Foreign Affairs Minister J. Rudolph Johnson presented seven checks totaling $5,345,459 to U.S. Ambassador James Bishop on Wednesday in Monrovia to effect the repayment.
The United States had suspended new aid and threatened to slow assistance programs unless Liberia paid the debt, as required by U.S. law.
