The Palestine Liberation Organization lost a bid to join the World Health Organization as an independent nation today when the U.N. agency, threatened with the loss of U.S. funds, voted to defer the matter for a year.

The United States had warned it would cease all payments to the agency, about 25% of the health organization’s budget, if the application in the name of “the state of Palestine” was accepted.

WHO Director-General Hiroshi Nakajima of Japan drew angry accusations of bias from Arab countries by asking members to vote to defer the issue because the loss of U.S. funds would be “a bigger danger than AIDS.”
