A motorcyclist was killed Friday morning when he tried to beat a red light at a Reseda intersection and struck a car making a turn, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

Anthony Ewalt, 24, of Northridge died despite wearing a helmet, Officer Richard Neuenschwander said.

Ewalt was heading west on Saticoy Street shortly before 7 a.m. when, witnesses said, he tried to beat the red light at Tampa Avenue, Neuenschwander said. The car he struck was making a left turn as the light was changing, the officer said.

Ewalt apparently tried to stop by laying the motorcycle on its side, but its momentum sent him into the side of the car, Neuenschwander said.

The car’s driver, Nasaria Frias, 30, of Canoga Park, was not hurt. No traffic citations were issued.
