UCSD Team Wins Title in Doubles

The UC San Diego doubles team of Christine Behrens and Nancy Calhoun won the NCAA Division III national doubles championship Saturday at Claremont-Mudd College with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Julie Kipka and Kathryne Lane of Kenyon College of Ohio.

Wednesday, UCSD won the men’s team title with an 8-1 victory over Kenyon.

RUNNING

John Rice and Joni Pendleton took first places in the men’s and women’s open divisions of the Palomar Pentathlon at Balboa Stadium. The pentathlon included five events--200, 400, 800, 1,500 and 3,000 meters--with an approximate rest of 30 minutes between races. Pendleton also won the women’s age handicap title. Graeme Shirley was the men’s handicap winner.

SOFTBALL

The second-ranked UC San Diego softball team lost to Calvin College, 3-1, in the NCAA Division III regional championship final at Grand Rapids, Mich.

UCSD finished the season with a 35-9 record. Calvin (28-5) advanced to next week’s NCAA Division III championships at Trenton State, N.J.

US International closed out its season with a nonconference doubleheader loss to visiting Cal State Fullerton, 7-2 and 6-2. USIU finished at 15-37. Fullerton improved to 45-13.

VOLLEYBALL

Alicia Turner of USDHS had nine kills and was voted most valuable player after leading the West to a 15-11, 8-15, 15-10, 15-12 victory over the East in the Mizuno San Diego High School All-Star match at UC San Diego. Blair Noon of San Pasqual and Poway’s Shannon Griffin had 15 kills apiece for the East.
