New York hotel owner Leona Helmsley failed today in a Supreme Court attempt to win a special pretrial hearing in her prosecution on charges of federal income tax evasion.

The justices, without comment, let stand a ruling that Helmsley cannot now appeal the trial judge’s denial of such a hearing.

Helmsley and her husband, Harry, were indicted along with two hotel executives a year ago on charges they evaded about $1.2 million in federal taxes over a three-year period. The Helmsleys on April 3 lost a Supreme Court appeal aimed at quashing the 47-count indictment against them. That appeal raised the same issue decided by the high court in another case March 28.
