From Times wire services

Greece opened today a major three-part exhibition ranging from 2,500-year-old antiquities to modern art to back its bid for the 1996 summer Olympics.

Melina Mercouri, the film star turned socialist culture minister, said the exhibition shows that Greece can offer “above all her cultural wealth and her soul” to the Games.

The 1996 Olympics mark the 100th anniversary since Greece’s ancient Games were revived in Athens.

The $750,000 exhibition covers aspects of the Olympics from antiquity to modern times under the theme “The Spirit and the Body.” It will run until January.

The Swiss-based International Olympic Committee will decide next year on the site for the 1996 Games.
