UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography has received a $500,000 grant to support the research and training of young scientists studying long-term global environmental issues.

The grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will support scientists who have recently completed doctoral degrees.

Scripps is widely known for its studies of the Earth’s physical and biological systems. It also has taken a lead in efforts to pull this knowledge together to cope with problems such as depletion of the Earth’s protective ozone layer.
