Washington state and federal officials signed a landmark 30-year agreement to clean up radioactive and hazardous waste at the Hanford nuclear reservation at Richland, Wash. With 5 billion cubic yards of waste, the 560-square-mile Hanford reservation is the U.S. Department of Energy’s most contaminated weapons production site. Hanford produced much of the plutonium for the nation’s nuclear weapons arsenal. Estimates of the cost of cleaning up wastes run to $50 billion.
