The Discovery Channel said Tuesday that it will launch “Assignment: Discovery” on Sept. 18 as a free program resource for teachers to tape and use in the classroom. Each day will be dedicated to a specific study area. Corporations and foundations will be recruited as underwriters, but billboards identifying them will not interrupt the two educational segments planned for each hour. “Assignment: Discovery” comes on the heels of Ted Turner’s announcement that his Cable News Network will begin a 15-minute current events show called “CNN Newsroom” on Aug. 14 and “Channel One,” a 12-minute newscast with two minutes of commercials from Whittle Communications of Knoxville, Tenn.
