SACRAMENTO — A baby boy was returned to his mother today, four days after the newborn was taken from a hospital by a woman wearing a white smock and a nursing home identification badge.
Sacramento Deputy Police Chief Lee Dohn said at a news conference at Sutter Memorial Hospital that the baby, Michael, was returned to the hospital in good condition. He said the child’s mother, 36-year-old Mary Thompson, is “elated, smiling and not crying any more.” Thompson and the boy were released from the hospital about 7:30 a.m.
Police, acting on a tip late Tuesday night, took into custody a 26-year-old woman found hiding with the baby under a comforter in a south Sacramento home. A caller had said a woman at the house had a newborn child--but that she had not been pregnant.
