IN BRIEF : Rival Soccer Fans Clash, 15 Injured
Nearly 200 fans of cross-town rivals Genoa and Sampdoria clashed in a two-hour rampage Tuesday night. Fifteen fans were injured and 20 were arrested.
Although no game was scheduled, opposing soccer fans gathered in two different cafes near the stadium. “It looked like a settlement of accounts which turned into urban guerrilla (warfare),” said Vito Mattera, Genoa’s government commissioner.
Mattera said six policemen were among the injured. Police seized about 100 clubs and iron bars and several knives after the riot, in which fans smashed the windshields of parked cars and hurled stones at the police.
