Two high school students have won three-week trips to the Soviet Union this summer in an essay contest sponsored by Ventura County Physicians for Social Responsibility and Ventura County Educators for Social Responsibility.

Janet Lund of Camarillo High School and Chris Arnold of Ventura High School submitted the winning essays. Students were asked to outline their strategies for moving the United States away from economic reliance on defense industries in the next 15 years.

The two will be honored Wednesday at a banquet at the Harbortown Resort Hotel in Ventura. The speaker will be Michael Closson, executive director of the Center for Economic Conversion, a group promoting alternatives to military spending.
