After a week of testing failed to uncover any PCBs in U.S. fuels being trucked into Saskatchewan province, environmental officials said today they have scaled down border checks for the toxic chemical there.

Environment Canada department officials said they are reducing the number of roadside inspections at high-traffic border towns immediately.

Bryan Armstrong of Environment Canada’s office in Edmonton said tests on eight Alberta samples and three Manitoba samples also showed no presence of PCBs. There was no immediate word on whether testing there will be cut back.

The border checks were initiated after reports that millions of gallons of hazardous chemicals had been mixed with fuel in the United States and shipped illegally to Canada since 1987.
