Former Bradley Aide Sues Over Arrest

The former police liaison for Mayor Tom Bradley has sued the city and 20 unidentified police officers and other city employees for assault and battery, false imprisonment and negligence, alleging that the officers unlawfully arrested and beat him up in Southwest Los Angeles last November.

In the Los Angeles Superior Court suit seeking unspecified damages, Kerman Maddox said 10 officers “violently assaulted and battered” him by threatening, hitting and kicking him outside his home in the 2800 block of South LaSalle Street.

“The case basically stems from the harassment and the embarrassment Mr. Maddox had to endure in front of his neighbors,” Maddox’s attorney Winston K. McKesson said Thursday.

Shortly after the incident, Maddox, 33, said officers roughed him up and verbally abused him for more than 15 minutes before saying that they stopped him for running a red light. The officers left after giving him a traffic citation, which was later dismissed in court, he said.

Police officials could not be reached Thursday for comment on the suit.
