A 15-year-old Great Bend, Kan., boy who attends a six-pupil church school won the first National Geography Bee today.

Jack Staddon, 6-foot-6 and the only eighth-grader at Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School, correctly answered three of five final questions to win a $25,000 college scholarship, the top prize of the bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

To clinch the title, Staddon correctly wrote “Altiplano” when asked to “name the flat inter-mountain area located at an elevation of 10,000 feet in the central Andes.” Among the questions missed were the percentage of blacks in the U.S. population in 1980 and the country that is the world’s leading producer of cork.
