NCAA Men’s Tennis : UCLA Questions Seedings

ATHENS, Ga. — UCLA has the better record, but not the better seeding in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. men’s tennis tournament, which opens a 10-day run this morning at the University of Georgia’s Henry Feild Stadium.
Stanford (18-4) is seeded No. 1 and UCLA (25-3) No. 2.
“It beats me how we were seeded No. 2,” said the Bruins’ Glenn Bassett, whose team is currently ranked No. 1 by the Volvo-Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.
Jeff Frank, of the NCAA men’s tennis committee, said Stanford received the higher seeding primarily because of it had a better record against the top five teams.
In Saturday’s competition, it will be Stanford against the winner of today’s Miami-Mississippi match; UCLA against the West Virginia-Utah winner; fourth-seeded UC Irvine against the San Diego-Minnesota winner, and USC against Georgia.
